The following are links to websites that may be useful to Academy members whether it be to help with your practice, maintain certification, share information with a patient or assist with research. Please note that these websites are separate from mafp.org and are not maintained by the MAFP.

Alzheimer’s Association – The Alzheimer’s Association advances research to end Alzheimer’s and dementia while enhancing care for those living with the disease.

American Academy of Family Physicians – The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is the national association of family doctors. It is one of the largest national medical organizations, with more than 110,600 members in 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam, as well as internationally.

American Board of Family Medicine – The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is the second largest medical specialty board in the United States. Through certification and maintenance of certification programs the ABFM pursues its mission by establishing, maintaining, and measuring high standards of excellence in the specialty of Family Medicine.

American Cancer Society – The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.

Americans in Motion/Health Interventions (AIM-HI) – Fitness is the treatment of choice for preventing and managing overweight, obesity, and many other chronic conditions. Through fitness education, physicians can encourage changes in patient behavior with the goal of better overall health.

American Family PhysicianAmerican Family Physician is the AAFP’s clinical review journal for physicians and others in primary care.

American Medical Association – A voluntary association of physicians in the United States which sets standards for the medical profession and advocates on behalf of physicians and patients.

Anaphylaxis and Food Allergy Association of Minnesota – The Anaphylaxis and Food Allergy Association of Minnesota (AFAA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate, advocate, and to support those with food allergies.

Ask About AspirinThe "Ask About Aspirin" initiative promotes the appropriate use of low dose aspirin to lower the number of first heart attacks and strokes in Minnesota.

CALS – Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) is an educational program designed specifically for the emergency medical training needs of rural healthcare teams.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) – The CDC is one of the major operating components of the Department of Health and Human Services. Its mission is to collaborate to create the expertise, information, and tools that people and communities need to protect their health – through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury and disability, and preparedness for new health threats.

ClearWay Minnesota – ClearWay MinnesotaSM is an independent nonprofit organization that improves the health of all Minnesotans by reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke through research, action and collaboration.

CMS.gov – A federal government website managed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. CMS is the federal agency that runs the Medicare program. In addition, CMS works with states to run the Medicaid program.

Culture Care Connection County Profiles – Learn the demographic, socioeconomic, and health status characteristics of the Minnesota counties you serve.

Death Registration Home/MDH – The Minnesota Department of Health provides information to coroners, medical examiners, physicians, and designated staff assistants about the death registration process in Minnesota.

Diabetes Prevention Program – An evidence-based program from the YMCA which helps patients who are at high-risk for developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physician activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce the chances of developing the disease.

Emergency Preparedness, Response & Recovery – Information about emergency preparedness and emergency response programs from the Minnesota Department of Health.

FamilyDoctor.org – This is a patient-friendly website produced by the AAFP which provides health information for the whole family.

Family Practice ManagementFamily Practice Management is a peer-reviewed journal published six times a year by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Its mission is to give family physicians the tools and information they need to build better practices and improve patient care.

Health is PrimaryHealth Is Primary is a three-year communications campaign to advocate for the values of family medicine, demonstrate the benefits of primary care, and engage patients in our health care system. Our aim is to build a primary care system that reflects the values of family medicine, puts patients at the center of their care, and improves the health of all Americans.

HealthFinder.gov – This is a government website providing information and tools to help patients and their families stay healthy.

Healthy Fish Choices – The Healthy Fish Choices online Continuing Medical Education (CME) curriculum has been created to give health care practitioners the information they need to help patients weigh the benefits and risks of fish consumption.

Honoring Choices Minnesota – Honoring Choices Minnesota (HCM) is a collaborative project between Twin Cities Medical Society, the health care community and the community at large to bring advance care planning to the metro area. This website provides tools to support conversations regarding end-of-life care planning for patients and families.

Immunization Home/MDH – The latest information on immunizations from the Minnesota Department of Health.

Immunization Action Coalition – The Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) works to increase immunization rates and prevent disease by creating and distributing educational materials for health professionals and the public that enhance the delivery of safe and effective immunization services.

JAMA – The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is an international peer-reviewed general medical journal published 48 times per year.

Mayo Medical School – Mayo Medical School educates and prepares medical students to be physician leaders in 21st century medicine.

Medical Spanish – A free tutorial for medical Spanish including recorded diaglogues.

Medline Plus Health Information – MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health’s Web site for patients and their families and friends. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, it brings you information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues.

Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance – A resource for the type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of cells lining the body’s internal organs, known as the mesothelium.

Minnesota Board of Medical Practice – The mission of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice is to protect the public’s health and safety by assuring that the people who practice medicine or as an allied health professional are competent, ethical practitioners with the necessary knowledge and skills appropriate to their title and role.

Minnesota Cancer Alliance – The Minnesota Cancer Alliance is committed to reducing the burden of cancer for all people living in Minnesota. We are a coalition of over 100 organizations from diverse backgrounds and disciplines dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer across the continuum from prevention and detection to treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care.

Minnesota Department of Health – The department’s mission is to protect, maintain and improve the health of all Minnesotans.

Minnesota Healthcare Guide – Published in December 2015 by Medical Publishing, LLC, this guide provides a listing of MN hospitals by location, administrators, nursing facilities, local public health agencies and more.

Minnesota Hospital Association – Minnesota’s 144 hospitals and health systems employ more than 113,000 people, provide quality care for patients and meet the needs of our communities.

Minnesota Medical Association – The Minnesota Medical Association (MMA) is a non-profit professional association representing physicians, residents, and medical students. The MMA’s mission is to provide advocacy, information, education and leadership for Minnesota physicians and their patients.

Minnesota Medicine – Published by the Minnesota Medical Association, this publication includes feature stories about important issues and interesting people as well as articles about research and clinical care.

Minnesota Web Recruitment – For providers who want to practice in Minnesota, and facilities seeking new clinicians, the National Rural Health Center offers Minnesota Web Recruitment. This online service provides detailed information about openings and makes it easy to connect physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants with facilities. The MAFP is a supporter of this online service.

MMIC – MMIC is the largest policyholder-owned medical liability insurance (medical malpractice) company in the Midwest.

MNsure – MNsure is a new central marketplace where Minnesota individuals, families and small employers can get quality, affordable health insurance and access tax credits or assistance to help pay for coverage.

National Guideline Clearinghouse – NGC is a public resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

National Institute on Drug Abuse – NIDA’s mission is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction.

National Institutes of Health – NIH is the nation’s medical research agency—supporting scientific studies that turn discovery into health.

National Network for Immunization Information – The National Network for Immunization Information (NNii) provides up-to-date, science-based information to healthcare professionals, the media, and the public: everyone who needs to know the facts about vaccines and immunization.

National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners – A new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) program that requires all medical examiners (MEs) who wish to perform physical examinations for interstate commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to be trained and certified in FMCSA physical qualification standards.

National Rural Health Resource Center – The National Rural Health Resource Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustaining and improving health care in rural communities.

Newborn Screening Program – Information from the Minnesota Department of Health about Minnesota’s newborn screening program for providers, including prenatal education.

Office of State Registrar – Electronic Death Registration – Information about death registration for coroners, medical examiners, physicians and designated staff assistants from the Minnesota Department of Health.

Pathways.org – A non-profit educational organization that offers free resources on child development. The website offers free brochures, handouts, and videos to promote early detection and intervention when dealing with children’s early sensory, motor, and communication delays.

Publichealth.org – An organization dedicated to connecting patients, students and professionals to the latest and most useful healthcare information and resources available.

Q

Quitplan – Quitplan.com provides options for smokers who may not want to use face-to-face or telephone counseling. This free website is a personal support center that features many helpful and interactive quit-smoking resources.

Road to 10 Program - October 1, 2015, is the new ICD-10 compliance date. To help your practice with this transition, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) is introducing its new Road to 10 Program. Developed in collaboration with small practice physicians from a variety of specialties, Road to 10 provides free and actionable tools, information, and training to support your ICD-10 journey.

Stratis Health – Stratis Health is an independent nonprofit organization that leads collaboration and innovation in health care quality and patient safety.

Society of Teachers of Family Medicine – STFM was founded to respond to the needs of family medicine educators.

State Innovation Model (SIM) Initiative – Minnesota’s SIM initiative is a joint effort between the Department of Human Services and the Department of Health. The goal is to help its providers and communities work together to create healthier futures for Minnesotans.

Tar Wars – Tar Wars is a nationwide interactive tobacco education program for fourth- and fifth-grade students. It is designed to discourage tobacco use among children by giving them an understanding of tobacco’s short-term effects and the way advertising influences people to buy and use tobacco products.

Twin Cities Medical Society – The mission of the Twin Cities Medical Society is to connect, represent and engage physicians in improving clinical practice, policy development and public health initiatives.

University of Minnesota Department of Family Medicine and Community Health – The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is part of the University of Minnesota Medical School. The Department’s purpose is to transform and renew family medicine through education, research, and patient care.

University of Minnesota Medical School – The University of Minnesota is one of the country’s top medical schools with campuses in the Twin Cities and Duluth.

Voices for Vaccines – A national vaccine advocacy group dedicated to raising the level of the voices of immunization supporters. This effort is guided by two Twin Cities parents, Karen Ernst and Ashley Shelby.

Volunteering in Public Health – A guide to volunteer opportunities in public health created by publichealth.org.
