Shailendra Prasad, MBBS, MPH, Minneapolis, received the 2014 Teacher of the Year Award from the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP).

The Teacher of the Year Award was first handed out in 1973. It is given to an outstanding teacher of family medicine in either an academic or practice setting. Candidates are nominated by students and colleagues. Nominators are asked to describe the candidate’s special teaching qualities and his or her impact on students and/or residents.

Dr. Prasad is a faculty physician and Associate Program Director at the University of Minnesota – North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program. He is also an Associate Professor and the Director of Global Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Nominators say Dr. Prasad is committed to developing innovative models for medical student and resident education. He not only has excellent clinical knowledge and research skills, but they say he has an astounding ability to invest fully in his students and searches out opportunities to engage learners on multiple levels.

Dr. Prasad developed a monthly lecture series called Community Health Advocacy Talks. He also worked with residents on establishing a respite care clinic at a local homeless shelter.

The Teacher of the Year award was presented to him during the MAFP Spring Refresher at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, MN, on April 10, 2014.

The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians is a professional association of approximately 3,000 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students organized to assist family physicians in providing quality medical care in Minnesota. The MAFP is the largest medical specialty organization in Minnesota and is a state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, one of the largest national medical organizations in the United States with more than 103,000 members.
