Family Physicians Name Rochester Doctor as the 2013 Resident of the Year

Carol Tunney, MB, BCh, BAO, Rochester, MN, received the 2013 Resident of the Year Award from the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP).

The award recognizes a third-year resident for significant contributions to family medicine in the community, including teaching, leadership and educational activities. Candidates are typically nominated by teachers and/or colleagues.

Dr. Tunney is finishing her training with the Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program. She received her medical degree from the University College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland. She is the Academic Chief Resident at the residency program and has worked to create a peer development program for 2nd year residents.

Dr. Tunney has been active in the residency’s community outreach program by providing care to the medically underserved and volunteering at sporting events. One of her accomplishments was the development of a preventive health lecture series which has been incorporated into the local school system’s curriculum.

The Resident of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Tunney on April 18, 2013, during the MAFP Spring Refresher at the RiverCentre in St. Paul.

The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians is a professional association of approximately 3,000 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students organized to assist family physicians in providing quality medical care in Minnesota. The MAFP is the largest medical specialty organization in Minnesota and is a state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, one of the largest national medical organizations in the United States with more than 103,000 members.
